Recital Policies & Procedures
Little School of Music School Recitals are open for all students enrolled in the Apprentice, Intermediate, Advanced, and College Prep Levels of Individual Instruction that have been taking lessons a minimum of 3 months by the recital date. (Music for Little Mozarts classes will have their own class recital.)
Recitals are generally about 45-60 minutes long. This can vary depending on the number of participants and the repertoire being performed (3 minutes max performance time per performer).
Students must prepare appropriate music selections and be prepared to perform at least 2 weeks before the recital date. Knowing how to play your music and being ready to perform on stage in front of an audience are not the same thing. Teachers will determine if students are ready to perform or will have to wait for the next recital or performance opportunity.
Once teachers determine a student is ready to participate in a recital, they will award the student a yellow Recital Sign-Up Slip (a physical piece of paper), that includes the performance details such as the recital dates, sign-up deadline, and music selections approved to perform. Parents are responsible for signing up for a recital time using the LSM Recital Entry form below, by the recital sign-up deadline date.
Parents often ask what time the recitals are, but it all depends on how many performers sign-up. Typically they are scheduled in the afternoon and early evening. The sooner the signups are completed, the sooner we will know the exact times. Recital space is limited according to the number of performers and guests attending. Please do not sign up for a recital if you might not be attending as this takes a spot away from another student.
If there is an emergency, or you become ill the day of the recital and are unable to attend, please contact the office as soon as possible: 661-222-2239
It is the students’ responsibility to bring any necessary music, backing tracks, your instrument, and wear appropriate performance attire. Nice slacks, button-up shirt, polo shirt, jacket and tie, dress, or a skirt below the knee are appropriate to wear. Please DO NOT wear jeans, tennis shoes, sneakers, hightops, sandals, sports jerseys, or other athletic wear or casual clothes. Music selections must also be appropriate for our young audiences (rated PG). This includes lyrics/words, and music topics/messages.
Plan to arrive about 5-10 minutes early to park, use the bathroom, and take your seat. It is not necessary to arrive any earlier unless there is a rehearsal scheduled with an ensemble or accompanist. Your teacher will advise you on what time to arrive if this is the case.
Late arrivals will have to wait until there is a break in the performance to enter the room. It is best to use the restroom before the recital begins to avoid distractions and interruptions during the recital.
Performers, families, guests, and teachers are required to stay for the entire performance. If you cannot arrive on time and stay for the full recital, then please do not sign up for the recital. We understand there are many activities going on, but it is not proper concert etiquette, nor is it fair to the other performers and guests to arrive late or leave early.
We want to have a pleasant recital experience for everyone!
Thank you for your cooperation.
