Little School of Music offers Group Classes as part of our program. Students may sign up for any class with any teacher as long as there is space. Specific Dates and Times will be emailed to you.

Below is a list of classes our teachers have designed to kick things off! Each listing is a set course with multiple classes students should plan to attend to get the full benefit from the planned curriculum. For example, if there are 4 classes, students should attend all 4 dates. Additional classes will be offered in the upcoming months.
All students enrolled in Individual Instruction are welcome to attend any of the classes (no instrument or level requirements to participate). Please talk with your teacher if you are undecided about which classes you may want to attend.
Music and Technology – with Steve Poloni
In this course, we will explore ways in which students can incorporate technology in their journey of learning and creating music. They will learn about common tools they can use in everyday practice, music notation software, virtual instruments, and an introduction to recording with BandLab.

Group vs. Solo Performances – with Holly Knoch
Solo vs. Playing in an Ensemble! What’s the difference, and what skills do we need to have to be successful in each of them? Over the course of these classes, we will examine what is needed to be an engaging soloist: what we should think about while we play and how we interact on stage. We’ll switch gears and talk about ensemble playing: why do we need to make eye contact with group members? Does our interaction on stage have to be visible? Why is it different than solo playing?

What is Improvisation? – with Rich Brown
What is improvisation? How does someone sit at an instrument and just start playing? Is it magic?! In this course, we will learn just how easy it is for anyone, no matter what their experience level is, to spontaneously create their own music.

Songwriting Basics, Part 1 – with Justin Haase
Songwriting Basics is a group class designed to introduce emerging artists with basic tools required to create a song. Instrumentalists can also benefit from this class as we will be discussing musical ideas, like motives and forms of classical pieces alongside the current popular song trends. Students will work on individual songs outside of class as well as collaborating with the class during meeting time. The class will culminate in students sharing their current projects and set them up for the next steps as a developing composer or songwriter.

Prominent Rhythms in Different Musical Styles, Part 1 – with Matt Fullove
In this class, students will develop a greater understanding of the different rhythms that are found in various musical styles while simultaneously learning how to use these different rhythms to help shape their own musical ideas. We will also dissect students’ favorite songs and analyze how rhythm patterns play a part in their appeal. This class is open to all instruments + vocal students!

Preparing for RCM Performance Exams – with Jean DeMart
In this course, students will learn how to prepare technically, musically, auditorily, and visually for their upcoming music performance exam. Understanding how and what to practice, and why, is as important as training the ear, for a better musical outcome. This course is designed for all students, any instrument, including voice and percussion, who are in the RCM program, or are just thinking about preparing for their first RCM exam and wish to gain more knowledge.
