Summer is the perfect time to try something new, like MUSIC! In the summer, most kids don’t have to go to school or do homework and many sports activities have ended. This means there is plenty of time to try new activities, or continue and get better at ones you enjoy. Parents are very concerned with trying out an activity to see if their child will like it. Summer Camps are a perfect way to “try it out” while giving the activity the time it deserves to have a fair trial period. When you sign up to play on a soccer team you play for a season, not for just one practice. It takes time to develop relationships, learn the “game”, and experience the activity to really decide if it’s for you.
If you are going to learn to play an instrument, you have to practice. Practicing is just part of what you have to do to get better at something no matter what it is. Since kids have plenty of free time in the summer, they are able practice more and make substantial progress over the summer months. It also gives them a chance to prepare for the following school year.
If you plan to join a music program at your school or a community ensemble, music lessons over the summer can give you a head start making things easier when you return to school and have homework. Practice time is more difficult to schedule during the school year, but it is very important. You have to make the time for it! Developing a regular practice time in the summer will help set a routine that can be carried throughout the school year. Create a good practicing habit!
