Grace in the Spotlight—From Piano Roots to Jazz Guitarist

Emily Canham joined Little School of Music in 2021—not to begin music for the first time, but to explore it in a whole new way. Already an accomplished pianist, Emily picked up guitar as a secondary instrument… and quickly made it her own.
Over the last four years, she has studied both acoustic and electric guitar, completed Rock School Grade 2, and worked through Berklee’s Modern Method for Guitar. Under the guidance of teacher Frank Browne, she developed a deep understanding of jazz rhythm, scales, arpeggios, blues soloing, and improvisation—often applying these concepts to both guitar and piano.
“Emily has had a huge senior year with us,” says Frank. “She’s now a true multi-instrumentalist. Watching her grow has been an absolute pleasure.”
This spring, Emily was promoted to the Advanced Program and will perform “Breezin’” by George Benson with Flashback at the senior recital, taking on jazz rhythm, lead melody, and improvisation—all backed by a full band. It’s a bold and exciting challenge that perfectly represents her growth.
But guitar is just part of the story.
Emily has been studying piano for over 14 years and recently completed three consecutive years at the Advanced Level of Certificate of Merit, earning State Honors each time. Her quiet determination and technical skill have opened doors to meaningful opportunities beyond the school—including her role this semester as choral accompanist for Santa Clarita Christian School’s junior high and high school choirs.
In April, she traveled with the choir to France and Switzerland to perform—an unforgettable opportunity that beautifully combined her musical talents and heart for service.
Emily brings focus, dependability, and quiet confidence to every lesson and every stage. Whether performing in LSM recitals, mentoring younger students, or showing up week after week with grace and humility, her presence has left a lasting impression.
“Sometimes she’s the oldest student performing,” says Miss Mindy, “but she carries herself with such humility and grace. The younger students look up to her—and so do we.”
Emily will be attending The Master’s University, where she will pursue a Bachelor’s in Music with an emphasis in Piano Pedagogy. She hopes to open her own piano studio, continue accompanying, and share her love of music with future generations.
Her parents, Cinnamon and Charles, have supported her every step of the way. In their words:
“Emily, you have been blessed with such talent. Since you were little, you’ve filled our home and hearts with your music. We pray that as you continue to pursue music in college, you’ll continue to bless others with your gifts. We are so proud of you. Love, Dad and Mom.”
Emily, we are proud of you too—for your consistency, your leadership, and your love for music that speaks volumes without ever raising its voice.
You will always be part of the Little School of Music family. 🎸♥️
