Meaningful Gifts That Bring People Together
By Mindy Cabral | Founder, Little School of Music

Every Christmas, we search for the perfect gifts for the people we love.
We make lists, visit stores, wrap presents, and carefully place them beneath the tree. We wonder if we’ve chosen the right thing, if they’ll like it, or if we’ve managed to find something truly special.
But some of the most wonderful gifts don’t come in a box.
Sometimes, they come with a melody.
Music has a remarkable way of bringing people together. It can fill a room with laughter, remind us of someone we love, or transport us back to a moment we haven’t thought about in years.
A familiar Christmas carol can bring back memories of childhood. A song playing in the kitchen can remind us of someone who used to sing while cooking. A beautiful performance can leave us with a feeling we carry home long after the final note.
That’s what makes music such a wonderful gift.
And there are so many ways to share it!
1. Give a Musical Experience
There’s something magical about hearing music performed live.
The anticipation as the lights dim. The excitement of hearing that first note. The energy of the performers and the audience sharing something together.
Consider giving tickets to a concert, musical, ballet, or holiday performance.
It might be a professional orchestra, a local community concert, or a performance by young musicians.
You could even make it a special outing with dinner, dessert, or hot cocoa afterward.
The gift isn’t simply the ticket. It’s the entire experience, and the memories you create together.
2. Give a Song That Means Something
Have you ever heard a song that instantly reminded you of someone?
Maybe it’s the song you danced to at your wedding, something your grandparents used to sing, or a silly tune that always makes your children laugh.
Music has a way of holding memories.
Create a personalized playlist for someone you love. Include songs that remind you of special moments together, favorite family traditions, or places you’ve visited.
You could even write a little note explaining why you chose each song.
Imagine receiving a collection of music that tells the story of your friendship or family.
What a thoughtful gift!
3. Give the Joy of Making Music
You don’t have to be a professional musician to enjoy making music.
A toddler shaking a little bell, a child discovering a melody on the piano, a teenager playing guitar, or a grandparent learning an instrument for the very first time can all experience the same wonderful feeling.
I made that music!
Musical instruments make delightful gifts for people of all ages.
For young children, consider simple percussion instruments, bells, rhythm sticks, or a small collection of instruments they can explore together.
Older children and adults might enjoy a ukulele, keyboard, guitar, or another instrument they’ve always wanted to try.
The important thing isn’t how expensive the instrument is.
It’s the opportunity to explore, create, and discover something new.
And here’s an idea: instead of wrapping only the instrument, include a promise to make music together!
4. Give a Story Filled with Music
Music and storytelling have always belonged together.
Think about the songs we sing to babies, the stories we tell with familiar melodies, and the musical traditions we share during the holidays.
A musical storybook can become much more than something to read once and place on a shelf.
It can become a family activity.
Read the story together. Sing the songs. Act out the characters. Make sound effects with instruments or objects around the house.
For young children, these experiences help connect words, sounds, movement, imagination, and music.
And sometimes, the same story becomes a beloved tradition that children ask to hear again and again.
5. Give the Gift of Learning
Perhaps someone in your family has always dreamed of playing the piano.
Maybe your child loves to sing, or your teenager has been asking about guitar lessons.
Perhaps you’ve been telling yourself for years that someday you’ll learn to play an instrument.
Why not make someday today?
Music lessons are more than an opportunity to learn notes and rhythms.
They’re a chance to develop a new skill, experience the satisfaction of making progress, express yourself creatively, and discover abilities you never knew you had.
For children, musical learning can also encourage confidence, patience, listening, coordination, and the ability to work with others.
And for adults, learning something new can be an incredibly rewarding experience.
One of the most wonderful things about music is that there’s no expiration date on when you can begin.
6. Give a Family Musical Tradition
Some of my favorite musical gifts don’t cost anything at all.
They’re the traditions we create.
Singing Christmas carols while decorating the tree.
Playing favorite holiday songs while baking cookies.
Gathering around the piano after dinner.
Having a family sing-along in the car.
Making up silly songs with the children.
Or simply sitting together and listening to beautiful music.
These little moments may seem ordinary when they’re happening.
But years later, they can become the memories we treasure most.
You don’t need a perfect voice or years of musical training.
You just need a little time together.
And perhaps a song or two.
7. Give Something Only You Can Make
Here’s one of my favorite ideas.
Create a musical gift yourself!
Write a little song for someone special. Record yourself singing their favorite lullaby. Play a familiar melody on your instrument. Make a recording of your family singing together.
If you’re not sure where to begin, you could even make a musical greeting card with a QR code linking to your recording.
Imagine a grandparent receiving a recording of their grandchildren singing a Christmas carol.
Or a child listening to a special song recorded just for them.
These gifts don’t have to be perfect.
In fact, sometimes the little imperfections make them even more precious.
They’re personal. They’re thoughtful.
And no one else in the world could give quite the same gift.
The Most Wonderful Part
As a musician and music educator, I’ve spent much of my life surrounded by music.
I’ve seen the excitement of a child playing a recognizable melody for the first time, the pride of a student performing for their family, and the joy that happens when people gather together to make music.
But some of the most meaningful musical moments happen far away from a stage or classroom.
They happen at home.
In the kitchen.
Around the Christmas tree.
During family celebrations.
And in the everyday moments when someone begins singing and another person joins in.
This holiday season, as you’re thinking about gifts for the people you love, consider giving a little music.
It might be a concert ticket, an instrument, a special recording, a lesson, a story, or simply an afternoon spent singing together.
Because sometimes the most meaningful gifts aren’t things we hold in our hands.
They’re the experiences we share and the memories we create.
And music has a beautiful way of making those moments last.
With warm wishes for a wonderful holiday season,
