The Beat That Brings People Together

Drums & Saturn Rock Band · Student Since 2021

Every band needs someone they can count on. The steady beat. The dependable rhythm. The person who quietly holds everything together. For Saturn, that person was Travis Bird.

Although Travis had loved music from an early age, his musical journey didn’t truly begin until he was thirteen years old. During the Covid years, he decided to take a chance on band at Arroyo Seco Junior High. After just one semester, his family discovered something surprising, he had already learned to read music with remarkable ease.

Music simply made sense to him.

But there was one instrument he had always dreamed of playing. The drums.

That dream led him to Little School of Music, where he began studying with his teacher, Matt. Together, they built a strong foundation, developing not only Travis’s technical skills behind the drum set, but also the confidence to perform, collaborate, and grow as a musician.

Before long, Travis joined his first Little School of Music rock band alongside his brother, Joshua. Sharing the stage together created wonderful memories, but as his confidence grew, Travis was ready to take the next step. He joined Saturn. There, he found his own place behind the drums.

Over the years, Travis became the steady heartbeat of the band, performing everywhere from Pocock Brewing Company and Lucky Luke’s to community fundraisers, church events, and finally the legendary stage of The Whisky a Go Go.

As the drummer, Travis was often tucked behind a wall of cymbals and drums. Capturing a great photo of him during concerts became something of a challenge, you had to catch him peeking through the hardware at just the right moment.

But while he may have been hidden from view… You always knew he was there. You could hear him. You could feel him. His beat carried every song forward.

One of Travis’s most exciting opportunities came when he was invited to perform as the drummer in fellow student Behya’s debut music video, “In My Eyes.” Experiencing the creative process of filming a professional music video opened an entirely new world and deepened his passion for music, collaboration, and performance.

Beyond Little School of Music, Travis also dedicated ten years to Scouting, where one of his favorite memories was completing a two-week backpacking trek through the mountains of New Mexico. Whether hiking miles through the wilderness or keeping perfect time behind a drum set, Travis has always shown the same qualities: commitment, perseverance, and quiet determination. Through it all, one thing remained constant. The friendships.

Music introduced Travis to people who shared his passion, challenged him to grow, and celebrated every performance together. Whether rehearsing for a local concert or preparing for a show at the Whisky, these experiences became more than performances.

They became memories.

His mother shares:

“Travis enjoyed the process of filming a music video, and it really sparked him to want to follow his passion for music and performance. He hopes to continue playing with future band members in college while studying Graphic Design at College of the Canyons and exploring everything the music program has to offer.”

For Miss Mindy, Travis represents something every band hopes to have.

“Some musicians naturally find themselves in the spotlight. Others become the steady presence everyone depends on. Travis has always been someone you can count on. He shows up prepared, works hard, supports his bandmates, and gives his best every single time. Watching him grow from a student discovering the drums into a confident musician performing on iconic stages has been such a joy. Much of that growth came through the encouragement of his family, the friendships he built with his bandmates, and the wonderful guidance of his teacher, Matt, who helped him develop into the drummer he is today. Those are the kinds of journeys that remind us what music is really about.”

As Travis begins his next chapter at College of the Canyons, one thing is certain.

Music will continue to be part of his story.

Whether through future bands, new collaborations, or simply sitting behind another drum set, he’ll continue doing what he’s always done best: Keeping the beat that brings people together.

Congratulations, Travis! Thank you for every rehearsal, every performance, every friendship, and every memory you’ve helped create. Keep the rhythm going. ♥️
