Emily Canham joined Little School of Music in 2021—not to begin music for the first time, but to explore it in a whole new way. Already an accomplished pianist, Emily picked up guitar as a secondary instrument… and quickly made it her own.
From the beginning, Emily brought focus, dedication, and quiet confidence to every lesson. Her teacher, Frank Browne, saw early on that this was no ordinary hobby—Emily was serious about learning, and she had the musicianship and mindset to grow rapidly.
“Emily has had a huge senior year with us,” says Frank. “She’s now a true multi-instrumentalist. Watching her grow has been an absolute pleasure.”
In just a few short years, Emily completed Rock School Grade 2, progressed through Berklee’s Modern Method for Guitar, and began developing her skills in jazz improvisation, scales, triad inversions, arpeggios, and blues soloing. She even began applying her jazz studies to both guitar and piano—a mark of her musical depth and curiosity.
This spring, Emily was promoted to the Advanced Program—an impressive achievement, especially considering guitar is her second instrument. She performed at recitals with excellence on both piano and guitar, and her calm presence and musicianship have inspired students and families alike.
“Sometimes she’s the oldest student performing,” says Miss Mindy, “but she carries herself with such humility and grace. The younger students look up to her—and so do we.”
Emily will perform “Breezin’” by George Benson with Flashback at the senior recital, taking on jazz rhythm, lead melody, and improvisation—all backed by a full band. It’s a bold and exciting challenge, and one that perfectly represents her growth.
Outside of LSM, Emily is preparing to attend The Master’s University, where she plans to continue studying and performing music. Her teacher encourages her to stay connected to jazz, explore piano improv, and keep playing in any setting she can—worship bands, local shows, or forming her own groups.
And most importantly—keep playing for joy.
Emily’s parents have supported her every step of the way. In their own words:
“Emily, you have been blessed with such talent. Since you were little, you’ve filled our home and hearts with your music. We pray that as you continue to pursue music in college, you’ll continue to bless others with your gifts. We are so proud of you. Love, Dad and Mom.”
Emily, we are proud of you too—for your consistency, your leadership, and your love for music that speaks volumes without ever raising its voice.
You will always be part of the Little School of Music family. 🎸♥️
