Quiet Strength, Loud Guitar—A Humble Rocker’s Journey
Flashback, Saturn · LSM Rocker Since 2019
Charles Graves joined Little School of Music in 2019, stepping into his first band with little fanfare—but it didn’t take long for everyone to recognize the spark in his playing. With his quiet presence and steady confidence, Charles quickly became a core part of the school’s rock band community, eventually taking the stage as the lead guitarist for Flashback.
Charles isn’t the loudest voice in the room—but when he plays, the room listens. His guitar work is expressive, precise, and full of feeling. He plays not just with skill, but with soul—connecting to the music and to his audience with every note.
Over the years, Charles has grown not only as a performer, but as a mentor and role model. He has supported younger guitarists in LSM’s newer bands—guiding them with patience, encouragement, and quiet leadership. Whether he’s filling in for another student, offering advice, or simply showing up with a smile and a great attitude, Charles is the kind of bandmate everyone wants to have.
“Charles always rolls with the music. He never complains. He helps when needed. He inspires just by being himself.”
— Miss Mindy
Recently, Charles has expanded his musical world even further. In addition to performing with Flashback and Saturn at LSM, he’s started playing in a punk band in Long Beach—where he continues to push himself creatively and collaborate with other musicians. He’s also written original music, including his own song “Fairytale,” featured in this year’s recital.
One of the most meaningful moments came during Flashback’s final performance at Pocock Brewing Company’s Barrel Room, where the band premiered “Fairytale.” It wasn’t just a concert—it was a culmination. As the band played, their longtime director Frank Browne, who had guided Charles for years, stood in the audience, quietly listening. A photo captured him in a moment of silent pride—his face holding the kind of bittersweet joy only a true teacher understands.
The band thought they were nearing the end—but they had other plans. Behind the scenes, they began secret rehearsals, led and coordinated by Charles and a few determined bandmates. They organized their own rehearsals, handled communication, and learned firsthand what it takes to run a band—everything from scheduling to song selection.
Flashback surprised Frank with one last set at the next Pocock show, and now they’ll perform again—entirely self-directed—for their final senior recital. A full-circle moment not just for Charles, but for the entire band that grew up together.
Beyond the stage, Charles is just as impressive. He holds three Associate Degrees (English, Behavioral Sciences, and General Studies) and is currently a junior at CSUN, majoring in English with an emphasis in Creative Writing. He also works at his family’s chocolate shop in Los Angeles, where he’s learning the art of being a chocolatier.
Charles’s plans are clear and full of heart: continue his education, keep writing, and keep playing music. He hopes to form more bands, record original songs, and share his creative voice with the world—on his own terms.
Charles, we are so proud of you—not just for your talent, but for your kindness, your work ethic, and your quiet leadership. You’ve made a lasting impact here, and we can’t wait to see where your next journey leads.
You will always be part of the Little School of Music family. 🎸♥️
