Growing Into Her Own Rhythm

Bass & Saturn Rock Band · Student Since 2016

Some musicians naturally find the spotlight. Others discover that their greatest strength is helping everyone else shine. That is Jayne Gilchrist.

Jayne first joined Little School of Music as an elementary school student, beginning with piano before exploring voice and eventually joining one of the school’s rock bands alongside her brother. Those early years gave her a strong musical foundation, but as she continued to grow, she discovered an instrument that felt like home. The bass guitar.

With her years of piano study already behind her, Jayne transitioned naturally to bass, quickly developing the musical instincts every great bassist possesses: listening, supporting, communicating, and creating the bridge between rhythm and harmony.

She found her groove.

As a member of Saturn, Jayne became one of the band’s quiet leaders. While bass players don’t always stand in the spotlight, they provide the foundation that allows every other musician to shine. Watching Jayne perform over the years has been a joy. Her sweet smile, calm confidence, and connection with her bandmates brought a special energy to every performance. You could see the communication happening without words, the glance across the stage, the locked-in groove, the shared excitement of creating music together.

She helped hold the music together.

Music was only one part of Jayne’s story. In school, she excelled academically as an Honor Roll student, served as President of the National French Honor Society, became a member of the California Scholarship Federation, and completed her Career Technical Education Film Pathway. On the softball field, she earned both the Most Valuable Player Award and the Blue Pride Award while competing as a two-year varsity athlete. Her creativity also extended into filmmaking, where she and her team earned First Place in the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Public Service Announcement competition.

Long before all of those accomplishments, however, Jayne was a Girl Scout. Miss Mindy still smiles when she thinks about Girl Scout cookie season each year. Jayne would proudly bring order forms to Little School of Music, and before long there were boxes of cookies waiting in the office, many of which somehow found their way into the hands of students after lessons. It became one of those simple traditions that made everyone smile.

Sometimes the sweetest memories aren’t the biggest ones. They are the little moments shared together along the way.

Her mother shares (from Jayne):

“I plan on attending Elon University in North Carolina, where I will study Early Childhood Education and Film. I hope to study abroad in New Zealand and France while continuing to work in areas I’m passionate about, including media, advocacy, and making a difference in every community I’m part of.”

For Miss Mindy, Jayne’s story has never been about one performance or one accomplishment.

“Watching Jayne grow has been such a joy because I’ve seen her quietly grow into herself. She explored piano, voice, and eventually found her place on bass. Today, when I watch her on stage, I don’t just see someone playing the right notes. I see a musician who listens, communicates, encourages, and supports the people around her.

Those are qualities that extend far beyond music. They are the qualities of someone who builds strong teams, strong friendships, and strong communities. I have no doubt Jayne will continue doing exactly that wherever life takes her.”

This fall, Jayne will begin an exciting new chapter at Elon University in North Carolina, where she plans to study Early Childhood Education and Film. She also hopes to study abroad in New Zealand and France, continuing her passion for learning, creativity, and making a positive impact in every community she joins.

Some musicians leave their mark with a solo. Others leave it by making everyone around them sound a little better. Jayne has always been that kind of musician.

Congratulations, Jayne. Thank you for the music, the teamwork, the smiles, the Girl Scout cookies, and the wonderful example you’ve been to those around you.

May you continue finding your rhythm, and helping others find theirs, wherever your journey leads. ♥️
